PETA calls for Britney Spears to be recognised as an unfit mother to her dogs as well as her children

In an open letter to Kevin Federline, the father of Britney Spears' children, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk has called for the rehoming of Spears' dogs, amidst fears the unbalanced popstar may be incapable of taking proper care of them in her current state.

The request is in direct response to Spears having her children taken from her last week, and is one I am wholeheartedly behind - indeed it is a request which should have been made long ago. Spears is often seen dragging the unfortunate pups around such unsuitable locations as bars and nightclubs. In one particularly unpleasant incident, Spears is alleged to have failed to seek immediate treatment for one of her dogs, London, after he was stepped on and broke his leg.

Britney Jean Spears (born December 2, 1981) is an American pop singer, dancer, songwriter, actress, and author. Her debut album ...Baby One More Time propelled her to international stardom in 1999.[1] It spawned several singles, including "...Baby One More Time", which topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.[2] She released her second studio album Oops!... I Did It Again in 2000 with continued success.[3][1] A third album Britney was released in 2001, followed by the release of her fourth album In The Zone in 2003. The album's breakout single "Toxic" has won Spears her first Grammy Award.[4] After the release of Greatest Hits: My Prerogative and a brief career break, she released Blackout in 2007.[5]

Spears's personal life has gained much attention from the media as a result of her stardom. In particular, her marriage to Kevin Federline in 2004. She gave birth to her first child; Sean Preston in 2005 and to her second child; Jayden James in 2006.[9][10] The couple's divorce in November of the same year was highly publicized, followed by an ongoing legal battle for the custody of their two children.[11][12]
